ICCR to organize festivals of Manipuri classicals

JAMMU, Feb 25: Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Jammu with its new initiative of bringing regions together today inked a MoU with Jawahar Lal Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal, to organise two major festivals of Manipuri classical and folk performances here.
On a special invitation of Regional Director ICCR J&K, Balwant Thakur, two member delegation headed by Director Jawahar Lal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy visited Jammu and held threadbare discussions with Regional Director  ICCR and also inspected the major performance venues including Abhinav Theatre and Matrika Auditorium SMVD University, Katra to see the possibilities of holding world class Manipuri festival of classical performances in Jammu and Katra.
JNMDA Imphal intends to bring it’s globally acclaimed Dance Drama in Manipuri style to J&K, particularly the classic of Kalidasa ‘Shakuntlam’ which has been a super hit presentation of JNMDA Internationally in addition to an exclusive programme of music and dance traditions of Manipur.
At each venue there will be two day festival which will be presented by the highly acclaimed professional performers of JNMDA repertory company.
Speaking on the occasion, Regional Director ICCR J&K Balwant Thakur disclosed that ICCR will also seek the help of State Government  particularly from J&K Academy of Art Culture & Languages and the local Universities for local logistic support and cooperation.
Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal is the oldest and the leading institution in India for teaching Manipuri Dance since 1954. The institution is a constituent unit of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. JNMDA has an Advisory Committee headed by the Governor of Manipur.
