Husband gets life-imprisonment for killing wife

JAMMU, July 28: Principal Sessions Judge Jammu Rakesh Sagar Jain today awarded life-imprisonment to Tara Chand, son of Shiv Ram of Patoli, who was facing trial for the murder of his wife for the last 7 years.
According to the police case, on February 13, 2007, Tara Chand poured kerosene oil on his wife and set her on fire over a trifle issue. Accordingly, case under Section 307 RPC was registered at Police Station Bakshi Nagar. On February 18, Raj Kumari succumbed to her injuries and offence against Tara Chand was converted from Section 307 RPC to Section 302 RPC. After completion of investigation challan was presented.
After hearing Advocate Rakesh Jeet Singh for the accused person, Principal Sessions Judge Jammu. Rakesh Sagar Jain observed, “a reasonable proportion has to be maintained by the court between the heinousness of the crime and the punishment.  The sentences are imposed to reflect the seriousness of the crime, to promote respect for the law, to provide just punishment for the offence, to afford adequate deterrent to criminal conduct and to protect the community from further similar conduct”.
“In awarding sentence, the court must look in to the crime, the victim besides the circumstances of the criminal and the impact of the crime on community”, Principal Sessions Judge said, adding “keeping in view the age of the accused, imprisonment for life shall be adequate sentence in the present case”.
Accordingly, accused Tara Chand was awarded imprisonment for life.
