Historic Mughal road closed due to snow, one-way traffic on Kashmir highway

SRINAGAR: The historic 86-km-long Mughal road was closed on Friday due to slippery road conditions following fresh snowfall while only one-way traffic will ply on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, a traffic police official said. Two-way traffic was plying on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir valley.
”We have suspended all traffic movement on Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region,” the official said. He said the road was slippery due to fresh snowfall overnight.
However, he said, the district administration from both sides of Pir-ki-Gali are working to restore traffic on the road, which is seen as an alternative to Kashmir highway.
The Centre has already sanctioned tunnel to make it an all weather road which otherwise remains closed during winter months due to heavy snowfall.
Large number of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, are stranded on both sides of the Gali due to closure of the Mughal road. He said restoring two-way traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway will take some time.
On Friday, traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no vehicle, including those of security forces, would be allowed from opposite direction to avoid traffic jam and accident. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying essential commodities for Kashmir valley, have been stopped at Jammu, Udhampur and other places on the highway. (AGENCIES)
