SRINAGAR, Nov 19: The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway was closed again on Monday due to fresh snowfall on Sunday, while the national highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country and historic Mughal road are through for one-way traffic only, a traffic police official said.
There was fresh snowfall on Sunday afternoon on the highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir, traffic police official said.
He said accumulation of snow, the road has also become slippery due to which traffic has been suspended as a precautionary measure to avoid any mishap.
Efforts are being made since early this morning to rescue the vehicles, including trucks and oil tankers, stranded at several places on the highway, particularly between Zojila and Meenmarg.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintainance of the highway area already on job to put through the highway. Once the road is put through, vehicles stranded at Kargil and Meenmarg will be allowed to move towards Sonamarg in central Kashmir.
Later vehicles from Sonamarg will be allowed to proceed towards Kargil. Only one-way traffic was being allowed on Kashmir highway and today vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar.
No vehicle will be allowed from opposed direction, the official said. The Light Motor Vehicle (LMVs) were allowed to move towards Kashmir since early this morning. However, Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) will be allowed from 1400 hrs to 2400 hrs.
Similarly, the 86-km-long historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region was also open for only one-way. Today traffic will ply from Shopian to other side of Pir-ki-Gali, he said, adding that no traffic will be allowed from the opposite direction. (AGENCIES)
