HC seeks report from SKIMS on facilities for patients

Srinagar, June 2: High Court today sought report from the Government regarding treatment and infrastructure available for general masses in Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical (SKIMS), especially Soura Srinagar for patients suffering from cancer.
Hearing PIL on the issue of lack of facilities to the cancer patients in SKIMS, the Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice M K Hanjura sought report from the authorities for exploring possibilities for carrying out surgeries to cancer patients every day.
Counsel appearing in the PIL advocate Syed Musaib submitted that only four surgeries are being performed every week due to insufficient operation theaters.
To this State counsel submitted that the authorities shall ensure all possibilities for carrying out surgeries every day. Court has been informed that there is a long list of cancer patients, who are waiting to get operated.
He submitted that the authorities be directed to ensure that surgeries are carried out every day.
Court has also sought action taken report with regard to the construction of the operation theaters as also timeline be indicated within how much time the operation theater will be constructed.
With regard to infrastructure at Jammu Division, court heard the parties via video conferencing and the Government advocate Sanjeev Padha has been asked to file action taken report by next date as he had undertaken previously.
Advocate Syed Musaib during the proceedings in the matter submitted that over the years there has been drastic increases in the number of malignancies cases in the State and to cater to the needs of growing population with growing cancer cases, “State Cancer Institute” an exclusive center for cancer patients was proposed by the State Government with the assistance of Central Government.
Petitioner-Rabia Khurshid who herself is a cancer patient, has undergone five cancer removal surgeries on various occasions and believes the State has failed to provide any proper infrastructure or assistance as was due to a citizen in a welfare state.
