SAMBA, Dec 6: Notwith-standing the tall promises made by the Government that the Stadia will be developed in nooks and corners of the State, the existing sports infrastructure is hardly maintained by the authorities at different districts of the State.
The Stadium at Gurha Slathia in District Samba is one such example as it is in pathetic rather dilapidated condition.
According to reliable sources, the Stadium is more used for marriage and allied parties rather than for holding sporting events.
“We had to play a match of an ongoing cricket tournament at Gurha Slathia Stadium on Sunday. However, when we entered the ground, it was in pitiable condition as there was huge garbage on the ground, because of the overnight party. Moreover, it was the show of cows and buffaloes rather than players and umpires,” said a player of the area on the condition of anonymity.
He further said that despite the fact that the ground is being looked after by J&K State Sports Council and there is an in-charge for its maintenance, the Stadium hardly serves the cause of promoting sports and sportspersons in the State.
Sources said that Gurha Slathia Stadium despite being the only cricket ground in its locality, cries for its maintenance.
The sports fraternity of the village and its adjoining areas appealed the Government for proper maintenance of the Stadium to make it playable at an earliest.
