Grievance Cell

J&K Government Grievance Cell, as part of Chief Minister’s Office, is faced with a piquant situation. The Cell was opened with much fanfare. People were prompted to send in their grievances and the Government, in turn, would look into these and respond. As many as 56,000 complainants were received by the Cell so far. These were examined and passed on to concerned departments and organizations for proper disposal. What the disposal would be and what the fate of these complaints would be is something not difficult to speculate about. Nothing happened.
The complaints are mostly about every day matters; sanitation, water supply shortage, power interruption, roads with potholes, traffic congestion, illegal encroachments, corruption by revenue and traffic police functionaries etc. It is anybody’s guess that such complaints are a regular phenomenon, whosoever runs the Government. Most of these are already known to the people and the authorities. Yet no quick solution to these problems is available with any agency of the state administration. One fails to understand how these complaints would get mitigated by a magic wand that the J&K Government Complaint Cell was expecting to be handling? The Cell, at the best, has been simply transmitting the complaint and leaving the matter there to cool down.
Unhappy over the state of affairs, the Chief Minister’s office has rightly decided to appoint Nodal Officers in each Administrative Department to ensure proper handling of these complaints.
We hope this step ensures sense of accountability among all officials handling public grievances.
