JAMMU, Oct 1: In view of ‘seasonal tribal migration in Jammu and Kashmir, the Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation (TRCF) has made an appeal to the law enforcement agencies to provide help and safety to nomadic groups in different routs.
As temperature dips in forest and upper area reaches of Himalaya, the tribal communities along with their animals including sheep, goats, cows , buffalos, horses, camels and dogs migrate seasonally towards down areas, in this month, through various routes in different areas of Kashmir valley and Jammu province.
The tribal community members, during a meeting of the Foundation- presided over by Gujjar Scholar, Dr Javaid Rahi and attended by community members, .appealed Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to pass appropriate orders in this regard.
Dr. Javaid Rahi, in his address, appealed local communities to facilitate Gujjars with their logistic support so that they may set alive the oldest moving traditions. He also appealed the tribal community members to maintain a close coordination with local elders and administration in view of any trouble while migrating towards plains and warmer areas of the State.
The migration, which started last week of September, will continue till next 45 to 60 days till the tribes reach to their target areas.
The other speakers said nomads while migrating face many troubles due to tremendous pressures on them .They will be looking for help from all quarters purely on humanitarian grounds, to run their livelihood, they added and appealed Jammuties who are traditionally known for tolerance, brotherhood and religious harmony – to help Gujjars -Bakerwals to understand their lifestyle, livelihood and be tolerant towards their animals. They pleaded that Forest Right Act-2006 be extended to J&K State to rehabilitate nomads as was done in other States.
The Speakers said that other than seven hilly routes of Pirpanchal, Gujjars and Bakerwals are also migrating though roads and routes including Mughal Road vai Shopian, Bandipur, Kupwara, Baramulla, Budgam, Srinagar, Kulgam, Pulwama, Kishtwar, Doda, Ramban, Rajouri and other districts of the State leading towards plain areas of the State and are facing hardships due to restrictions.
