Govt to introduce new Food Policy: Ramzan

JAMMU, Apr 4: Realizing need for introduction of Food Policy in the State, the Minister for CA&PD and Transport, Choudhry Mohammad Ramzan has said that implementation of the food policy would help to streamline the public distribution system.
The Minister was replying after concluding the discussion on the working of CA&PD and Transport Ministry here in the Legislative Council today.
Appreciating the members for raising the points and giving suggestions for improving the efficiency of the department, the Minister assured them that due consideration would be given towards their suggestions.  He said 18 lakh families are registered and getting food grains from the department against 22 lakh exists in the State.
The Minister said as part of expansion programme 4000 new sale out lets are being proposed to be set up across the State to bring more effeicncy in public delivery system.
While referring to the issuance of new ration cards, the Minister said that all the eligible ration card holders would be given ration cards.
Underlining the importance of Consumer Affairs, Ch. Ramzan said that steps are being taken to strengthen the Consumer Affairs Wing of the department and Consumer Affairs Act 1987 is being amended in consultation with all the stakeholders. He said that the Consumer Courts would be given more teeth to redress the complaints of the consumers. He said that full-fledged charge has been given at Joint Director Level officer with adequate staff to maintain the Consumer Affairs Wing.
Regarding LPG, the Minister said that Centre has increased the cap on subsidized cylinders from 6 to 9 while the Government has recommended to Central Government to increase it up to 12 in view of varied geographical topography of the State.  He said 17 lack KYC forms have been processed and updated so far  while home delivery systems has been made operational in two major cities of Jammu and Srinagar. He said a gas pipeline from Bhathinda-Jammu-Srinagar is under consideration of the Government , adding once the project is started it will improve further gas availability system in the State.
