JAMMU, Feb 3: Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Choudhary Mohammed Ramzan and Provincial President National Conference Devender Singh Rana today described creation of new administrative units as a futuristic measure to revamp the administrative apparatus and to ensure inclusive development at the grass roots level.
Addressing a large number of people belonging to various areas of the State, who had assembled at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan, for periodical public hearing this morning, Mr Ramzan, while referring to public distribution system, indicated setting up of Government ration depots in J&K by dispensing with the prevailing dealer system for maximum consumer satisfaction. He said ways and modalities in this regard are being worked out, which include rehabilitation of the dealers and streamlining the distribution system.
He said efforts are underway to ensure the coverage of entire population under rationing in a phased manner. “As of now 99 lakh souls are getting the rations while the Government is contemplating to cover another 10 lakh by utilizing the savings on account of transportation of the food grains”, he said, adding “the State Government has taken up with the Centre the issue regarding covering of different segments of the society under rationing and a favourable decision is expected soon”.
Mr Ramzan also gave an overview of the transport sector, saying the Government undertaking has just two per cent presence in the overall passenger transport segment in the State. He said the revenue of the State Road Transport Corporation is likely to increase from Rs 38 crore last fiscal to Rs 90 crore so far this financial year, even though no vehicle has been added to the fleet. The increased revenue, he said will enable the Corporation to add up new vehicles in its fleet so as to meet the public requirements.
Addressing the people, the Provincial President elaborated on the creation of administrative units, saying these will meet the requirements of the people in various areas for another six decades.
Deputations from Kathua, Billawar, Udhampur, Kupwara, Dansal, Rajouri besides deputation of SRTC Employees Union and Gujjar and Bakerwals also met the Minister. They apprised him about their collective and individual problems.
