Govt breaks silence on ‘Hindu graveyards’ in Myanmar

NEW DELHI: Days after news about “Hindu graves” found in Myanmar made headlines, the Government of India for the first time on Friday gave its assessment on the issue but remained non-committal on whether Indian officials will participate in the October 3 ‘diplomatic corps’ visit to the spot.

“We have seen the press reports about these graves and we have also looked at the statement that was issued by the (Myanmarese) State Counsellor office,” MEA spokesman Raveesh Kumar told reporters here. He said, “India condemns terrorism of all forms” and lays emphasis on the fact that there can be no justification to any act of terrorism — whenever it targets civilians.

“In these conflicts, we do hope that the authorities will be able to bring to justice the perpetrators of crime….and hope that the families of the victims will be extended all possible assistance so as to instill a sense of security and return of normalcy,” Mr Kumar said. Answering questions, he said, the government of India is “aware” that the Myanmar Government has extended an invitation to the diplomatic corps to visit the affected region.

But about whether Indian Government’s representatives would also accompanying the team, the MEA spokesman said, “…I am (also) aware of some of the media personalities from India being part of that…..I am not sure about the participation from our (Government of India) side or whether our mission is participating or not…..but I will get back to you”.
