JAMMU, Nov 28: Governor NN Vohra inaugurated the 61st National School Games-2015-16 in the discipline of Cricket Under-17 Girls, being organized by the Directorate General, Youth Services & Sports at MA Stadium, here today.
Imran Raza Ansari, Minister for Technical Education and Youth Services & Sports, was the guest of honour on the occasion.
Welcoming the participants the Governor observed that there is tremendous sports talent among the boys and girls of the State and hoped that, with the availability of improved facilities and increasing opportunities, they will excel in all sports and games. He said that if their talents are nurtured and adequately groomed many of them shall make it to the national teams in all games and sports disciplines in the coming years.
Referring to the 61st National School Games Cricket (U-17 years Girls), the Governor observed that cricket lovers would get a very good opportunity to witness the participating teams in action in the coming five days.
The Governor congratulated the School Games Federation of India and the J&K Youth Services and Sports Department for organising this Championship and hoped that this would further promote cricket, which has been a very popular game in the State.
Before declaring the Games Open, the Governor unfurled the School Games Federation of India Flag and released balloons, on this occasion. He took salute from the contingents of the players at an impressive March Past, which was followed by Oath Ceremony by the teams.
Speaking on the occasion Imran Raza Ansari, Minister for Technical Education and Youth Services welcomed the participants and highlighted the achievements of the Department for promotion of sports activities in the State.
Ten teams including 200 participants from across the India are participating in this event. The matches shall be played at M.A stadium, Jammu; University of Jammu; KC Public School, Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra.
Later-on, Jahangir Mir, Director General Youth Services & Sports presented vote of thanks and threw light on the activities of the Department.
Senior Vice President SGFI, Ashok Kumar was present on the occasion.
The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Manmeet Kour and Rajinder Kotwal.
Meanwhile, in the inaugural match, J&K registered their first win by defeating CBSE in an easy contest by 5 wickets at MA Stadium.
Earlier, winning the toss and batting first, CBSE scored 72 runs in the stipulated 15 overs, losing 6 wickets in the process. Shama and Trisha contributed 26 and 18 runs for CBSE, while Pushpa claimed 2 wickets for J&K.
In reply, J&K chased the target easily by losing 5 wickets, thus won the match by 5 wickets. Sanjana scored 14 and Iqra contributed 11 runs for J&K. Anjali took 2 wickets for CBSE.
In another match at MA Stadium, Telangana thrashed Tamil Nadu by 10 wickets. Tamil Nadu scored paltry 58 runs. Deepa top scored with 12 runs. Dharini took 2 wickets for Telangana.
In reply, Telangana chased the target without losing any wicket. Poojita and Kiriti contributed 18 and 19 runs respectively.
In another match at Jammu University ground, AP defeated Punjab by 8 wickets. Punjab scored 95 run in 20 overs, with Manat and Parul contributing 27 and 19 runs respectively, while Navdeep scored 10 runs. Tajesvi was the wrecker-in-chief for AP, who scalped 4 wickets, while Hean Lata and Sindiya claimed 2 wickets each. Sindiya was the top scorer with 38 runs, while Tajesvi and Manjula contributed 17 and 15 runs to the total respectively. Kanika and Parul took 1 wicket each for Punjab.
In the match played at KC School ground, Maharashtra got better of Gujarat by 5 runs. Maharashtra scored 80 runs, while Gujarat bundled out for 75 to lose the match by 5 runs.
