SRINAGAR, Sept 30: Governor N.N. Vohra and Usha Vohra, First Lady, visited the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) Centre in Kupwara today.
This Centre has been undertaking various initiatives for training and capacity building of women in traditional crafts and thus reviving the traditional skills.
Reema Nanavaty, leader of the SEWA Centre, and some of the senior staff gave a brief introduction about the activities of the Centre and informed that, since its inception the Centre had succeeded in imparting skills in various crafts to over 7000 women.
Governor and the First Lady inaugurated a cutting and tailoring course and an apple supply chain tie up with the Coca Cola at the Centre. They went round the various facilities in the Centre, interacted with the staff and trainees, and lauded the deft craftsmanship of some of the women who were engaged in embroidery, handloom weaving, cutting and tailoring of garments, agro foods production and marketing of renewable energy products.
Governor and the First Lady congratulated Nanavaty and her colleagues for the outstanding work being done by SEWA Centre. Governor asked Khalid Jahangir, Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, to allocate a suitable piece of land to the Centre so that it could have its own premises and be able to enlarge its valuable activities. Governor also announced a grant of Rs. one lakh to the Centre for advancing its activities.
Shamsheer Hussain, SSP Kupwara, was also present, besides the Deputy Commissioner.
