JAMMU, Sept 24: Maintaining that Gojri is the largest spoken tribal languages of Northern -Western India with more than two millions native speakers in Jammu and Kashmir State, the speakers of a programme organized here today by Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, said that the language deserves more attention from the Government, NGOs for its all round development.
The Gujjar community members attended the programme presided over by noted Gujjar scholar Dr Javaid Rahi.
The speaker further said that the influence of Gojri as a cultural language in Indian subcontinent is increasing day by day mainly due to growing ethnic consciousness among Gujjars, Bakerwals and other communities who speak this language since centuries.
Dr. Javaid Rahi, in his address, stated that Gujjars- the main speakers of Gojri- who live in 12 States of North-Western India, listed Tribals in J&K and Himachal Pradesh while in 10 other State they were categorised under Other Backward Classes, are fighting vigorously for its inclusion in 8th Schedule of India as their mother tongue is common feature among Gujjar community.
On the occasion, the meeting adopted 7 resolutions, which include; constitution of committee to pursue the matter related to inclusion of Gojri in the 8th Schedule of India Constitution, opening of Gojri Research Centre in Jammu University, Gojri Department in Kashmir University, provide share on Doordrashan and Radio including daily programme and news bulletins from AIR and DD Jammu and Srinagar, introduction of Gojri up to 12th standard through State Board of School Education, recognition of Gojri by Sahahitya Akademi New Delhi and declare Gojri speaking people as Ethno-Linguistic Minority.
A committee of senior writers, poets and intellectual will work jointly and meet different dignitaries to address the issues with regard to development of Gojri language and culture. The members nominated are Mohammad Amin Qammar, Ch Khakan Sajjad, Ch Iqbal Azeem, S H Tariq, Ch Khadam Qammar, Fazal Hussain Mushtaq, K D Chopra, H D Parwaz, Barkat Ali Baghri, Jan Mohammad Hakeem, Rafeeq Soz and Asad Chohuan.
