JAMMU, May 21: The oxygen plant which was installed just last week in Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Jammu, is non-operational for last two days as some snag has erupted in it.
According to the sources in the hospital, the oxygen plant which was raised in the Medical College with an estimated cost of over Rs one crore with an objective of providing uninterrupted oxygen supply in Emergency Ward, Operation Theatres, Critical Care Units (CCUs) and Intensive Care Units (ICUs) just few days back by a Delhi based company, stopped functioning just after two days of its installation, the reasons best known to the concerned authorities.
Expressing doubts over the smooth functioning of the plant, sources said that a large sum was spent on the installation of this big oxygen plant which has the capacity of about 1200 lpm but the way it became non-operational just after two days of its installation, has led to raising fingers on its efficiency.
The sources further said that there is no doubt that hospital authorities had enough stock of oxygen cylinders and no patient is suffering due to non-functioning of this plant but the question arises that what is the fun of this plant if hospital administration has to purchase oxygen cylinders from private firms.
When contacted, Medical Superintendent, GMCH, Jammu, Dr Ravinder Rattan Paul, admitted that due to some fault the oxygen plant in the hospital has become non-operational. However, he said that the technicians of the hospital can give better and right information on the issue. “I can only say that our patients are not suffering as we have enough stock of oxygen cylinders, which we use to keep for such type of situation”, he added.
Executive Engineer, Mechanical Division, GMCH, BS Chibber, when contacted, said, “It is true that the oxygen plant has stopped working since the night of May 19, as due to thunderstorm and lightning and resultant fluctuation in power supply some fault has erupted in the plant”. He said we have registered the complaint with the firm responsible for its repair and service and by tomorrow the problem will be sorted out.
