GMC faculty shortage unacceptable

Medical Council of India is the chief agency that lays down all norms for setting up a Medical College in any State of the Union including our State. Health service is a very sensitive service and lives of millions of people in the country depend on the nature of service that Medical Colleges provide by churning out medical graduates and post graduates after rigorous learning and training for a number of years.  The Medical Council of India is empowered to inspect any Medical College and ensure that it meets all the statutory requirements of efficient teaching and training courses for the students. Recently, the MCI conducted an inspection of Jammu Medical College that was a very thorough and detailed inspection. The visiting team examined and inspected each and every item that falls under the control and supervision of the College. By and large it has found that in most of the items the College has maintained the norms laid down by the MCI except in the number of faculties and para-medical staff required for the college under rules. It has found that in some departments Assistant Professors are working as head of the department in place of a Professor which is not allowed by the rules laid down by MCI. In the same way some Associate Professors are placed in charge of the department which again is in contravention of the rules. The MCI has noted that the college has not given heed to its previous notice to the same effect and the posts of Professors remain unfilled.
Additionally, the MCI has found that in the sector of para medical force, it is also understaffed and that is not good for a medical college. Actually, the issue of understaffing of faculties in Jammu Medical College was taken up by Excelsior more than once in the past in the hope that authorities would take note of it. But regrettably the irregularity has not been removed. Medical and administrative authorities should understand that society has reposed its trust in them and they should come up to their expectation. Government should expeditiously initiate the process of filling the vacant posts and overcome the shortage of faculties and staff in the Government Medical College, Jammu.
