Gilsarlake battling for survival

Any patient having entered critical stage of ailment , on deterioration of condition battles for survival , the chances of which are generally bleak. The same, unfortunately but shockingly enough can be said about Gilsar lake in the heart of Srinagar city which till only three decades ago was a crystal clean water lake and a tourist spot. What a travesty , it has now become a health hazard. Who is bothered? Nobody gives a call for a Hartal for its revival nor are there any protest demonstrations to save it from dying.
The race for construction of residential houses, laying of more roads, accumulation of garbage and dirt, encroachments on banks, dumping waste and garbage mercilessly in it has choked this lake. It has shrunk, the water is no longer clean but emits stinking fumes which the neighbours describe as intolerable. Carcasses of dead animals and filth in it have made it a dirty small pond. Such a condition which it is reduced to must shock all nature loving people and no Government or any administration can succeed in their efforts unless people of the area and of adjoining localities take it upon themselves to salvage its critical condition by keeping it free from polluting, ravaging and dying it. Channels going out of it are blocked by residential houses which are either illegally constructed or the SMC has given building permission without protecting the interests of this lake. Government agencies must seek local support and put in all efforts to save this beautiful water body before it is too late.
