Geological Indication (GI) is a mechanism under Intellectual Property Rights by virtue of which a State can bring various agricultural products under the label of IPR. This registers the product as the property of the State and cannot be pilfered or stolen as has happened in a number of cases. We understand that the Agriculture Department is proposing to bring 100 agriculture products from Jammu and Kashmir under Geological Indication (GI). It includes the RS Pora Basmati for which there has been a persistent demand from the producers of the Basmati rice. It will be remembered that RS Pora Basmati rice has world market and as such the brand is stolen by some unscrupulous companies to make profit in the name of RS Pora Basmati rice. With bringing one hundred agricultural products including Basmati rice under GI, the interests of Basmati producers will be protected. It is a very useful decision taken by the Agriculture Department and Basmati producers besides others whose products will be brought under GI will be thankful to the Government. This is a very beneficial step in the larger interest of the people engaged in agrarian activity in the State.
