Gehlot pays tribute to Babu Jagjivan Ram on birth anniv

NEW DELHI, Apr 5: Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot today paid tributes to freedom fighter and former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram on his 111th birth anniversary.
Gehlot along with former Lok Sabha speaker and Babu Jagjivan Ram’s daughter Meira Kumar and Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale paid floral tributes to Jagjivan Ram at his ‘samadhi Samta Sthal’ near Rajghat.
Family members of the late leader, large number of followers, social activists and ministry officials also attended the prayer.
A prominent Dalit icon, Babu Jagjivan Ram was a freedom fighter and national leader who fought for upliftment of the downtrodden. His birth anniversary is celebrated as ‘Samta Diwas’ in the country.
He was a Cabinet Minister for 35 years and held several key portfolios.
As Food and Agriculture Minister, he is credited with the Green Revolution, and as Defence Minister he led India to victory in the historic 1971 war against Pakistan which saw the birth of Bangladesh. (PTI)
