Geelani arrested, 12 injured in clashes

Srinagar, July 3: Around a dozen people were injured in clashes that broke out in Lal Chowk area of Anantnag town this afternoon against the arrest of Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani who was supposed to lead a rally in the town today.
The activists of Hurriyat Conference (G) carried out a protest demonstrations after the prayers after Geelani failed to reach there and news of his arrest reached them.
Angry youths pelted stones on police and paramilitary personnel deployed in the area. Police charged batons and fired tear smoke shells to disperse them.
The pitched battles between police and protesters left several people injured in Lal Chowk and old town areas and tear smoke filled the air around.
Police earlier foiled Geelani’s plan to address a public gathering in Anantnag town by detaining him near his residence here.
“As Geelani tried to leave for south Kashmir, he was detained by a large posse of police who were stationed outside his residence at Hyderpora,” a Hurriyat spokesperson said.
Hurriyat Conference chairman Geelani had announced to offer Friday prayers in Anantnag and was scheduled to address a public gathering there after the prayers.
The spokesperson said that dozens of Hurriyat leaders were also detained along with Geelani.
