SRINAGAR, Aug 13: The first meeting of State Bio-Diversity Board was held here today under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary, Mohammad Iqbal Khandey.
Detailed discussions were held regarding preparation of the draft Biological Diversity Rules and their notification, constitution of District and Block level Bio-Diversity Management Committees and documentation of biological diversity.
The Chief Secretary called for inviting comments on the draft rules from experts and to consult the Law Department in this regard. He said after the rules are notified, the Forest Department should ensure that Bio-Diversity Management Committees across the State are formed at the earliest.
These committees, he said will do the documentation of the biological diversity including preservation of habitats, conservation of land races, cultivars, domesticated stocks and breeds of animals and micro- organism and chronicling of knowledge related to biological diversity. Besides the Panchayat members, prominent farmers, tribal collectors, etc. these committees will also be assisted by experts from Forest, Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Health, Fisheries and Education Department.
The meeting was attended by Commissioner Secretary Forests Sheikh Ejaz Iqbal, Commissioner Secretary Agriculture, Dr. Asgar Samoon, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Chief Wild Life Warden, Vice Chancellors of SKUAST, experts from University of Kashmir, Director State Forest Research Institute and other officers from various  departments.
