Former J&K Governor expires

Girish Saxena, affectionately called Gary Saxena by his close friends, passed away at the age of 90. He is survived by two daughters. Garish Saxena had close association with J&K State as he had two stints as Governor of the State first from May 26, 1990 till March 13, 1993 and in second stint 1998. Those were the years when externally sponsored terrorism in Kashmir was at its peak and the civil administration of the State was under great pressure.
Gary Saxena was from Indian Police Cadre and had been shifted to the super intelligence agency of the country and headed the Research and Analysis Wing as its Director from 1983-86. His appointment as Governor of J&K at a crucial period of the history of insurgency in the State was on the basis of his experience of handling uprising and gearing up security agencies to meet the challenge. His main contribution is in activating the State Police Cadres at a crucial time to deal with armed insurgency and sedition in a befitting manner. As former RAW chief he had full knowledge of the nitty-gritty of Kashmir imbroglio and the manner in which local leaders were conducting themselves in face of threats and intimidation from a large section of brain washed and armed insurgents. State leadership found him a cool and considerate administrator who spoke soft language but with the desired effect.
DE also expresses sadness on the demise of the former Governor and conveys condolence to the bereaved family.
