JAMMU, Oct 27: At Amandeep Group of Hospitals Amritsar, a biological implant reversed the disability of an 18- year old, who underwent a revolutionary cell-based cartilage treatment called Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI) or Cartigrow.
Giving details of the case, Dr Inderdeep Singh, an experienced orthopedic sports surgeon who performed the surgery along with his team, said from childhood, Dheeraj Kumar Dogra, a resident of Miran Sahib in Jammu, loved to play hockey and aspired to become a renowned hockey player. Regular practice gave him knee pain and locking, but it was trivial to be considered a grave danger. But the pain gradually intensified and started to hinder his practice.
“Even daily activities like climbing stairs, walking and running became a laborious task. Every time Dheeraj tried to run, he felt immense pain, locking and a clicking sound in his knee. After several medical examinations and MRI scans, he was diagnosed with cartilage damage that needed immediate attention”, he added.
Dr Inderjeet said Dheeraj consulted him at Amandeep Group of Hospitals, in Amritsar who prescribed an advanced cell-based treatment for cartilage injuries. Dheeraj is now pain-free and continues to pursue his passion- hockey. Here it is worth mentioning that this is first of its kind surgery in Punjab.
Briefing about this unique surgery, Dr Inderjeet said Cartigrow is a biological cell-based treatment which permanently repairs injured cartilage. It is two-stage minimally-invasive procedure. In the first step, loose body removal and articular cartilage is arthroscopically (through key holes) harvested from healthy and lesser weight bearing area of the patient’s knee.
After 4 weeks of cell processing, the cultured cells are implanted into the defect site. This results in cartilage regeneration and restoration of joint function. Cartigrow is approved by the Food and Drug Administration of India and licensed by the Drug Controller General of India, Ministry of Family and Health Welfare, Government of India in 2017.
