Fierce gun fight erupts in south Kashmir

SRINAGAR : A fierce gun fight erupted in south Kashmir district of Pulwama between militants and security forces today.
On a tip-off about the presence of militants, troops of 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), 183 CRPF and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint search operation at Newa in Pulwama at 1030 hrs, official sources said here.
When the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.
Security forces immediately took position and retaliated, ensuing a fierce gun battle, which was going on when the reports last came in. The cordon around the village was further tightened to foil any militant attempt to escape, they said.
Additional security forces have been rushed to the area, where some youths were protesting against the encounter, the sources added. (AGENCIES)
