Fencing on India Pak border will be completed by end of next year: Rijiju

NEW DELHI, Sept 18: Minister of state for Home Kiren Rijiju has said that the fencing on the Indo-Pakistan border laced with modern technology will be completed by the end of next year.

Speaking at a conference organised on the topic of ‘Smart Border Management’ by FICCI in collaboration with India Foundation, Mr Rijiju said that due to the involvement of many agencies in border management , work on the fencing and application of technology is being delayed.

He said that work on the fencing was delayed due to complex tendering process and other formalities and stressed the need to remove these formalities now. Mr. Rijiju stressed the need for better coordination and cooperation between various Government agencies and all the parties to speed up this work.

He said that along with the adoption of technology, there is also need to change the mindset. He expressed the hope that by the end of next year, fencing equipped with modern technology will be completed on the border. He said that development of border areas should be done in a similar way as is being done in the interior areas of the country.

He said that Government is working to strengthen the marine police to help secure the country’s long coastline. For this, there is a need for a good coordination between policy makers, defence and security agencies .

The Minister of State for Home said that the Government is fast moving forward on improving security and infrastructure in the border areas. Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre said that there are various challenges before the border states of the country which include terrorism, infiltration, drug trafficking and smuggling from the border.
