LEH, Mar 16: A team of Market Checking Squad of Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department (FCS&CAD) raided various wholesaler stores around Skalzangling, New Bus Stand, Choglamsar and Maneychulding areas in Leh on Wednesday. Team along with the Executive Councillor for FCS&CAD, LAHDC, Tsering Sangdup, Councillor Lower Leh, P. Wangdan Shuhu and Assistant Director (AD) FCS&CAD Ahmad Hussain made a surprise checking of seven chicken cold storages in Leh. Out of them, from three cold storages one quintal 45 kgs of foul frozen chickens were seized and a fine of Rs. 33,000/ was imposed on them. The samples collected from two cold storages were sent to the Animal Husbandry Department for laboratory testing and another two cold storages were sealed and after proper verification, action will be initiated against the defaulters.
Expressing his anguish over checking team not having proper information about the locations of cold stores in Leh, EC Sangdup issued  strict instructions to AD FCS&CAD to be vigilant in future to book such defaulters. He also issued orders to the checking squad team from the Weights and Measures, FCS&CAD and Medical Department team to check for the proper packaging, manufacturing date on the packet in future as number of chicken packaging were found improper not maintaining the standard procedure.
Talking to media EC Sangdup said that during this time of the year they received maximum complaint from public against shopkeepers for allegedly selling rotten meat/ chicken in the market thus they have formed special checking squads to keep track on such defaulters.
Lower Leh Councilor P.Wangdan Shunu said that It is concerned with the public health thus he requested the team to keep regular checking for such defaulters so that they don’t dare to play with the safety of public health.
AD Ahmad Hussain said that they formed special checking squads who will regularly check the market and they were given instructions to book the defaulters.
Later the seized items including meat, prawn, fish and chicken were disposed off in the Bomb guard areas.
It is pertinent to mention that on the initiative of lower Leh Councillor P.Wangdan Shunu similar checking also took place two days ago on various locations around Skalzangling and Leh city and number of shops were issued challan for storing expiry goods. A fine amounting to Rs.15,500/ raised from 7 shops who were challenged for keeping expiry products such Biscuits, tea, juice, even Lactogen worth approximately Rs.7500. The seized items were destroyed.
