JAMMU, Oct 14: Keeping in view the holy ritual of observing fasts during Navratris, Dr. Sushil HoD Cardiology today highlighted their significance in maintaining overall health and also advised certain section of individuals to follow proper guidelines while observing them.
“Besides fasting can be viewed as a deeply spiritual practice that is meant to benefit us in body, mind and heart, it’s overall benefit for human body is not less than the spiritual dimension.  Recent findings established it beyond doubt that there are many advantages in fasting for short periods. Research showed that fasting can help lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, control diabetes and reduce weight.  The major risks for heart disease are high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes and overweight and if we reduce these, we can reduce the risk of heart disease. An unhealthy diet can be a consistent source of inflammation. Foregoing meals occasionally can prevent food-related inflammation.   As we age, rogue cells can proliferate throughout the body, while damaged tissue can contribute to diseases. Fasting also helps in cell recycling, a process of self digestion at the cellular level, called autophagy,” said Dr. Sharma
While interacting with the people assembled during the day long camp at Bhagwati Ashram, Paloura, Dr. Sushil said although fasting offers health benefits, it is not safe for everyone.
“So there is need to consult your physician before you begin fasting. Those who should be more cautious while fasting include women who are pregnant, children and teenagers, people who are diabetic and those having chronic medical problems. Moreover, for those who are observing fasts meal planning is essential.  Avoid foods that are high in sodium or which may cause bloating while more reliance should be on fruits and vegetables as they are helpful for hydration.  Further, don’t suddenly start eating everything in sight when you are done fasting. People who are on medications should take the medicines properly even while observing fasts,” he said.
