BEIJING, Feb 23: China today said it has reached “extensive agreements” with India in the bilateral talks the Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar had with his counterpart Zhang Yesui and went onto state that the “dialogue reached the goals as expected”.
“The two sides had an in-depth exchange and comprehensive exchange of views and reached extensive agreements…..the dialogue reached the goals as expected, and is of positive significance for bilateral relations,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters here.
He said at the first strategic dialogue between India and China held here yesterday, both the sides charted out a programme for improving relationship in different areas in 2017 and advance “practical cooperation, strengthen coordination and cooperation on regional and international issues”.
The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at the ministry’s regular briefing today that officials on both sides “reached extensive consensus” while accepting the fact that “China and India have extensive converging interests and huge potential for cooperation”.
Indian Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar, who was in Beijing for the first India-China strategic dialogue, yesterday said both sides had “useful” exchanges on international issues. The restructured dialogue co-chaired by Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Zhang Yesui, who is the Executive Vice Minister in the Chinese Foreign Ministry, saw both sides articulating their positions on issues ranging from India’s entry into the elite Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG) and on getting the UN 1267 Committee sanctions on Pakistan-based Jaishe-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar.
On both these issues, China has been stalling the movement of the global body. “The fact that other countries were pressing this application showed that there was broad international support for this and concerns about Masood Azhar”s activities,” Mr Jaishankar had pointed out. (UNI)
