Expanding tourism

Chairing a meeting over breakfast with Arun Kandoo, Vice-President, The Rail Journey, an event organizer of MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events) Chief Minister  Mufti Mohd. Sayeed has expressed his attractive ideas of boosting tourism in the State by adding new dimensions to its reach. Streamlining tourism, for which there is still large scope in the State, is not enough; The CM wants it to become the economic backbone of the state and certainly it has the potential to be so. Introducing chopper service between Srinagar/Jammu to tourist destinations will be a rewarding enterprise. It is a brilliant idea to make developed tourist spots like Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Patnitop as conference and seminar venues in combination with the tourism department. Interestingly, winter tourism to the valley and Ladakh would be a great event for ski and snow game lovers. The CM is very right that with improved economic status, sections of society will evince keen interest in eco-tourism as well. Big corporate houses can play very significant role in promoting tourism related activities. Tourism department has club houses and luxury resorts that would be an attraction for affluent segments among the tourists.
We would also suggest that pilgrim tourism also needs to be given a boost in all regions of the State especially in Ladakh with such a variety of rich and old culture. The Department of Tourism should have a different project for development of tourism in Ladakh region, now that the previously imposed restrictions of visiting some border areas has been lifted. The Union Government is determined to extend a network of roads in the vast Ladakh district and that should become an incentive for the tourists from within the country and abroad.
