Enormous scope for setting up world class sheep farms in J&K: Sajad

SRINAGAR, May 22: Minister for Animal and Sheep Husbandry, Sajad Gani Lone today said that there is a huge scope of setting up world class sheep rearing farms in the State with the institutional support and involvement of private players in the state.
The Minister said this while chairing a meeting of officers of Sheep Husbandry Department convened to review the functioning of the department and status of the works.
The Minister said that the setting-up of Sheep rearing farms would go a long way in increasing the mutton production, besides generating employment opportunities to the unemployed youth especially in rural areas. He also underscored the need for adopting long term and short term measures for giving boost to the sector.
Emphasizing the need of fodder management, Sajad said that it is the need of the hour to exploit the vast un-utilized pastures by converting them into permanent fodder producing pastures.
Stressing upon the officers for launching awareness campaign to educate people about schemes in vogue for the welfare of people dealing with this sector, the Minister said this will help in the promotion of sheep and sheep products in the State in a big way.
Earlier, Commission Secretary, Sheep Husbandry Satesh Nehru briefed the Minister about the functioning of the department, besides progress and achievements registered by the Department.
Director, Sheep Husbandry, Kashmir Dr K K Sharma, Joint Director Extension Dr Mohammad Sharief, Deputy Directors and senior officers of Sheep Husbandry Department were present on the occasion.
