JAMMU, Feb 14: Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh inaugurated the 1st Maharaja Hari Singh Memorial Gold Cup Football Tournament in an impressive function at GGM Science College Football ground, here today.
MLA Jammu East Rajesh Gupta, DGP Dr SP Vaid and former Minister Gulchain Singh Charak were the guests of honour, while Justice Parihar Singh, Narayan Singh President Rajput Sabha, ZA Thakur President JKFA, Sheikh Mehmood, Organizing Secretary of the Tournament were present on the occasion.
Top football Clubs of Jammu are taking part in the Tournament, which is being held under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA).
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Chief Minister said it is imperative to honor the state’s legends and icons who have contributed immensely in different fields of life.
Dr Singh while highlighting the contribution of Maharaja Hari Singh said he has contributed in every sphere of life and the same is of historic nature.
He said his special focus was on educating the weaker and downtrodden sections of the society and he ensured that free education is introduced in the State.
Dr Singh said that by organizing the football tournament in the name of late Maharaja, the organizers have done a commendable job as it would come up as a regular feature and the younger generation especially the sportspersons would also come to know about the historic work and contribution of the Maharaja.
He said the government has undertaken several measures for catalyzing the sports activities and in this regard several national and international tournaments have been organized whereby our youth get an opportunity of competing with several stall wards and get the requisite exposure to excel at various fora.
MLA Jammu East, Rajesh Gupta also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the contribution of the late Maharaja.
DG Police in his speech said that the sports is a medium by which the youth get the requisite platform to exhibit their latent talent. He said that it also takes away them from the global menace of drug addiction and narcotics.
Earlier, J&K Bank Academy defeated SFA Jammu by two goals to nil (2-0). The first goal was scored by Ankit in 20th minute, while the second goal was netted by Bhanu in 30th minute.
The match was officiated by Vijay Kumar, Suresh Gupta, Rocky Sharma and Hilal Ahmed.
In tomorrow’s fixture, Sainik Colony FC will take on Mussa Club at 2 pm, while Young Rovers will face Churchill Brothers at 3:30 pm.
