NEW DELHI, Aug 30: To commemorate the Golden Jubilee of 1965 Indo-Pak war, Union Minister of State in PMO with independent charge of Northeast and Lok Sabha MP from Udhampur-Kathua, Dr Jitendra Singh today announced setting up of a “War Memorial” from his MPLAD fund as a tribute to the martyrs and brave hearts who had contributed to India’s glorious victory which brought pride to the whole nation within a few years after the disillusionment of Chinese debacle in 1962.
The memorial will be brought up in Reasi town and a piece of land measuring approximately 5 kanal has been earmarked for the purpose in the most central location in front of Mini Secretariat and Reasi Deputy Commissioner’s office complex. The highlight of the War Memorial  will be a monumental 1965 Army Battle Tank captured from the Pakistan forces and a spacious Park surrounding the platform on which the vestige tank will be placed.
Sharing this information with media persons, Dr. Jitendra Singh said, the war of 1965 was fought, to a large extent, along the borders of Jammu & Kashmir and marked a firm reiteration of not only the bravery and courage of the Indian Forces but also the patriotic commitment of the people living in this border State. He recalled that a few months before the war broke out, there was heavy infiltration into the State by Pak agents and the most remarkable feature to note was that common people of the State including those living in the Kashmir Valley had themselves got into the process of apprehending the Pakistan infiltrators and handing them over to Indian authorities.
At a time when Pakistan relentlessly continues with its mischief in the State of Jammu & Kashmir, Dr. Jitendra Singh said, it is the responsibility of the earlier generation which was a witness to 1965 war to acquaint the younger generation about the rich legacy and commitment with which in the immediate post-independent years, the people of Jammu & Kashmir, across the regions and religions, had in one voice, unanimously committed themselves to be an integral part of the Union of Indian Republic.
Dr. Jitendra Singh further informed that the amount for bringing up the War Memorial in Reasi will be spared from the second installment of MPLAD of Rs. 2.5 crores which has been recently received. In addition, from the same installment, among other allocations to be made include Rs. 40 lakh to bring up a “Dreamland Park” in Kathua city, a Community Hall in Udhampur town, another Community Hall in Billawar town, laproscopic surgery equipment and digital laboratory facility in Billawar hospital, toilets enroute Machhail Yatra, a community shed in Ram Nagar, upgradation of cremation ground at Chenani and a school bus for Navodaya Vidyalaya at Basohli. The remaining allocations are being worked out depending on demand and requirement from different parts of the constituency, he said.
