SRINAGAR, Mar 7: The family of a “dowry death” victim today alleged that she was murdered by her in-laws after failing to pay the dowry of Rs 5 lakh in cash. They demanded justice and blamed police for hushing up the case.
Inder Singh father of the deceased 23 year-old woman, of Dildar Tangdar in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district said her daughter was married just three months ago but due to the repeated demand of dowry the woman was beaten to death after they (her parents) failed to fulfill the demands of her in laws.
“My daughter was beaten to death by her in-laws during the intervening night of February 4 and the torture marks were visible on her body, but doctors produced fake report after being bribed by the accused family,” Singh alleged, adding that the police has filed weak cases against Dalbeer Singh. husband of the deceased, his father Dileep Singh and other family members.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Kupwara, Abdul Jabbar said the police have arrested all the five members of family and the case is under investigation.
However, Singh said the police have failed to nab two of the main culprits involved into the “murder” of her daughter and appealed the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, Inspector General of Police Kashmir and Women’s Commission to look into the “gruesome” murder of a young woman.
