SRINAGAR, Feb 3: In a rare of rarest cases, doctors in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district removed four nails from a man’s stomach during two separate surgeries.
Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Anantnag, said the patient was admitted on February 1 in the hospital. “He was suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding (GI bleed). Any patient who comes with G1 bleed here we routine conduct his endoscopy. So when we conducted his endoscopy we found some nails and so far we have removed four nails. Also, doctors told me that there is also a pen inside. In next stage, we will remove that also,” he said.
Revealing past history of the patient, the MS said that he was suffering from seizure disorder (epilepsy) and for this he was taking medicines. “As you know whenever any patient suffers convulsion, we put nail or similar object beneath his tongue so that he doesn’t hurt his tongue. So, a God man had told patient’s family to place iron object beneath his tongue and the family said that they used to place nails in midst of his teeth.
“But since the patient was mentally retarded and was also suffering from convulsion, usually they are not cared much by families… so far we have removed four nails. Now we are also removing the pen,” he said. The MS further said that the Surgery was conducted by Dr Muhammad Shafi Hakeem (Gastroenterologist), Dr Azad Malik (Surgeon specialist), Dr Hilal (Neurologist) and Dr. Nasir Malik (Anesthetist).
