Doctors owe a debt

The nation saves funds to provide for the training of doctors because we need many doctors to attend to our vast population. Therefore the doctor owes a debt to the nation which he must pay back. That is the moral duty of all doctors. The Prime Minister did not feel happy to be told that 40 per cent of our doctors went abroad for jobs. While they flourish there and win a name for themselves, they hardly think of returning to their native land. This is not expected of the doctors. The Prime Minister was speaking on the occasion of 42 anniversary celebration of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, (AIIMS), New Delhi and he told the doctors that they were fortunate enough to have found entrance into this most prestigious institution. But his lament was that there was unsatisfactory research activity in medical science in our country in comparison to other countries in the world. This does not mean that our doctor have not the potential. The question is of taking interest in helping the nation develop its indigenous research programme.
There is another drawback with our doctor community. After earning professional degree they hesitate to render service in rural areas of the country. This is true even of the doctors who hail from rural areas. This type of mindset has to be given up. The Prime Minister very rightly pointed out that there are two types of relations which the doctors build with patients. One is the relation of heart and the other is the relation of body. There are doctors who reach the heart of the patient while there are others who just treat the body of the patient and never try to reach his heart.
We hope that our doctors will hail the message of the PM, which has come in good faith. The sense of nationalism has to be sharpened among the community of doctors. India has to move fast in the direction of medical research. This is a joint programme of so many agencies that are required to work in unison if meaningful research is to be done in medical sciences.
