D&FCO seizes cigarettes costing Rs 9000

JAMMU, Feb 11: Drugs and Food Control Organization (D&FCO) conducted surprise raids at vendors at Talab Tillo, Bohri, Bus Stand and Trikuta Nagar areas dealing in sale of tobacco products without having 85 per cent pictorial warning on the package as mandated under Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003.
According to official spokesman, during inspection the Food Safety Officers under the overall supervision of Assistant Controller Food, Municipal Limits Jammu conducted raids at M/s BD Chaurasia, Talab Tillo and M/s Chaurasia Pan Bhandar, Trikuta Nagar. The vendors were found indulging in selling of cigarettes without specific health warning, pictorial depiction as mandated under section 7 of Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, he stated.
The cigarettes under the trade name of black, dunhill, win, more, camel, davidoff, mond and garam costing approximately Rs 9000 were seized on the spot and the legal action as warranted under Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act will be initiated against the defaulters in due course of time, the spokesman added.
Since such inspections are a regular exercise of the department but the market surveillance in the coming days will be intensified, he stated.
