Official sources told EXCELSIOR that on the basis of several complaints and subsequent discreet enquiry the Income Tax Department J&K Circle carried out day-long surveys in more than half a dozen premises of five businessmen in Jammu and Samba districts.
The action which was started in the morning continued till late this evening with sleuths of the Income Tax Department laying hands on several documents pertaining to investments, income and purchases made by these firms without reflecting the same in their respective Income Tax Returns.
In Jammu, Rashtriya Industries owned by Harish Vij, Janta Binding House of Raman Vij and M J Enterprises owned by Pawan Rekha Vij were surveyed. These firms belonging to one family are dealing with notebooks. They have a huge establishment at Satwari and a factory at Rohi Morh near Airport on Jammu-R S Pura Road.
Similarly, establishment of one Vijay Kumar under the name and style of Kheer Bhawani located near Hyundai showroom on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was also surveyed by the Income Tax Department sleuths.
“The businessman, who is dealing with sanitary-ware goods, was also found concealing income. During the preliminary scrutiny of record huge mismatch between actual stock and entries made in the books was detected”, sources said while disclosing that all the books pertaining to the sanitary-ware business were impounded for detailed examination.
In Samba, the personnel of Income Tax Department surveyed the business establishments of one Ramesh Chander Kapoor, who owns two stone crushers and is constructing huge commercial complex in the town.
“During the initial scrutiny of the impounded record it came to the fore that the businessman was concealing the income from the stone crushers and utilizing the same in construction of commercial complex”, sources informed.
They said that exact evasion of income tax by these firms will be established following completion of detailed scrutiny of the impounded documents in the next some days. “In these cases, unexplained investments, concealment of income and fudging of record has become crystal clear so far”, sources added.
“The Income Tax Department is repeatedly making appeals to the assessees to disclose exact income and pay tax accordingly but it seems that these businessmen were not ready to ensure compliance to the provisions of the Income Tax Act as such compelled the taxmen to knock at their doors”, they said.
Stating that these surveys should be an eye opener to other businessmen and traders, sources said, “the Income Tax Department is keeping constant watch on its assessees through different channels and will not spare those indulging in evasion of tax”, adding “the survey in Samba district is a testimony to the fact that the department has devised a strategy to lay hands on tax evadors in all parts of the State”.
“During the past some years the business activities in several district headquarters have increased considerably as such adequate attention is being paid towards these areas so that none of the tax evadors remains beyond the reach of the taxmen”, sources further said while dropping enough hits about more surveys in the coming days.
It is pertinent to mention here that few days back Income Tax Department carried out surveys in the militancy-hit areas of the Kashmir valley for alleged tax evasion running into crores of rupees. During these surveys, eight premises including godown of two companies were searched at Pampore and Pulwama in South Kashmir.
