Delay in paramedic exam jeopardises students’ career

Srinagar, June 27: The Jammu and Kashmir State Medical Faculty (SMF) of Health Department is jeopardizing careers of thousands of paramedical students by delaying their first year examination even as their two-year course is ending September this year.
Over 5000 students undergoing various nursing and paramedical courses in 30 paramedical institutes including 25 private and five Government-run Ancillary Medical Schools (AMT) schools have been left in quandary.
“Government has put our careers into jeopardy. We would have been preparing for the final year of our course, but due to insensitive administration examination of the first year is yet to be conducted,” said Adil Ahmad, a student studying in a paramedical college.
Ahmad said their precious academic time will be lost as they cannot apply for further studies if their course is not finished on time as admissions begin in outside colleges.
The Government had created State Medical Faculty under the Health Department to manage and control the affairs of Para Medical Courses in the State.
Not only delay in examination students also criticized the SMF for messing up their course syllabus.
“The syllabus for our course is not bifurcated. For first year exam questions are asked from that part of the syllabus which either is not taught in the first year or cannot be covered in one year. Atleast 30 per cent of the questions are asked from the uncovered syllabus as a result students fetch poor marks,” said, Asif Malik, another student.
SMF has not framed a system to conduct biannual or supplementary exams for those students who fail during their two-year course.
SMF president and Director Health Jammu, Veeri Sharma told Excelsior the examination of the paramedical students will be conducted in the first week of July.
However Registrar SMF Dr Mohammad Shafi said, “there has been no update till now about conducting the examinations in the first week of July.”
