JAMMU, Aug 10: In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) highlighting shortage of doctors and para-medics in hospitals across Jammu province, Division Bench of the State High Court comprising Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Sanjay Kumar Gupta today granted four weeks further time to Senior AAG H A Sidiqui appearing for Chief Secretary, Commissioner Secretary Health and Medical Education Department, Director Health Services Jammu and Secretary J&K Public Service Commission for filing their response.
When the PIL filed by RTI activist Balwinder Singh seeking directions to the State Government to detach the additional/surplus staff posted in the various health institutions in Jammu city came up for hearing, Advocate Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed with Advocates Rahul Raina, Suraj Singh and Supriya Chouhan appearing for the petitioner submitted, “doctors in Jammu district particularly in Jammu city are surplus and this is the root cause of the failure of health care in the remote areas”.
Advocate Ahmed further submitted that appropriate directions be issued to the State Government to come forward with the list of doctors serving in Jammu city as this step will demonstrate that the influential /politically connected doctors are serving in Jammu city for more than one decade, thereby paralyzing the entire health care in the rural areas.
Senior AAG H A Sidiqui appearing for Health and Medical Education Department submitted, “all efforts are being made out to send doctors from the cities to hilly/rural areas”. He, however, sought further time to respond to the PIL.
After considering the submissions of both the sides, Division Bench extended further four week’s time to Senior AAG H A Sidiqui appearing for Chief Secretary, Commissioner Secretary Health and Medical Education Department, Director Health Services Jammu and Secretary J&K Public Service Commission for filing response to the PIL.
