Dangal earns over Rs 106.95 cr on opening weekend, highest ever for any Bollywood film

NEW DELHI, Dec 26:  Continuing its strong run at the box office, Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ has taken an excellent opening at the box office in India, earning Rs 106.35 cr on opening weekend, trade sources said.
The film has registered the best numbers ever recorded by a Bollywood film in its opening weekend. Dangal, which earned Rs 64.62 crore in its first two days, saw a huge jump in its collections yesterday at over Rs 42.35 crore, taking its total earnings in its opening weekend to Rs 106.95 cr.
Trade sources said Dangal has notched up the highest weekend eas well as the highest Sunday ever for a Bollywood film. ”Rs 42.35 crore was the Sunday figure for Dangal (all versions), the highest Sunday for any film. Weekend total Rs 106.95 crore, highest ever,” trade expert Komal Nahata said.
The film, directed by Nitesh Tewari, has gone past the entire Week One collections of several biggies in its opening weekend itself. Trade sources said the film has gone past the entire first week numbers of films like Baaghi [59.72 crore], Dishoom [53.34 crore], Mohenjo Daro [51.18 crore], Befikre [48.75 crore] and Udta Punjab [48.5 crore].
It beat the lifetime business of Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay, which was Rs 100.25 crore. The flick also opened extremely well in the international circuits. Dangal has raked in around Rs 50.40 crore gross from the International circuits, in its opening weekend. With the film continuing to draw crowds at the theatres, trade sources feel Dangal could well cross the opening week collection of Sultan ( Rs 229 crore). Riding on the strong Buzz around it, the outstanding acts by Aamir and Fatima Sana Sheikh and rave reviews by the critics, ‘Dangal ‘ has got phenomenal response at the box office .
It earned Rs 29.78 crore on its opening day across India, trade sources said.  Based on life of India’s champion wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who battles the tradition of patriarchy to train his daughters Geeta and Babita to realise his dream of making them international wrestling champions, ‘Dangal’ hit the screens yesterday.
Directed by Nitesh Tewari, Dangal features Aamir in the title role of Mahavir Phogat and newcomers Fatima Sana Sheikh and Santa Malhotra as his daughters Geeta and Babita . The movie, one of the most-awaited films of the year, has been lauded by critics and audiences.  (AGENCIES)
