JAMMU, Feb 11: Aggrieved over alleged suspension of bus service for them for the last four days following controversy over fare hike, the hostel boarders of Central University of Jammu today took out a 30 km long protest march from their hostels at Sainik Colony to the CUJ Campus at Raya in Samba.
The protesters include majority girl students, who took more than five hours to cover the distance on foot and reach the campus. They were carrying placards and raising banners against the suspension of the bus service and hiking the bus fare.
On reaching the campus, the protesting students held a demonstration in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office and demanded immediate roll back of the fare hike. Even as the CUJ Vice-Chancellor Prof Ashok Aima offered the students to come out with a solution, the later said that it was the responsibility of the University administration.
It may be recalled that the CUJ students, particularly the hostel boarders are protesting against the circular issued by the CUJ Administration hiking the University bus fare six times that too during the mid session. According to the circular, each student must pay an amount of Rs 1000 per month to avail the complete bus service or free bus service.
The protesting students alleged that the University had suspended their bus service from hostel at Sainik colony to the main campus at Raya for the last four days. As the talks with Vice-Chancellor failed to pacify the students, the protest demonstration continued.
Till filing of this report, the students were still protesting at the CUJ campus and they announced to continue their protest till their demand is conceded.
