Vani, Amandeep tee up at Mediterranean Open

Sitges (Spain), Apr 19:

Vani Kapoor and Amandeep Drall will spearhead Indian challenge this week at the inaugural Estrella Damm Mediterranean Ladies Open which tees off here tomorrow.

The duo, who made their card for the Ladies European Tour (LET) through Qualifying School, have been trying to gain as much experience as possible.

Vani has made the cut in both the starts she has had this year at the Oates Victorian Open and the Lalla Meryem Cup, while Drall missed the cut in both.

It has been a new journey for the players. While Drall earned a LET card through Qualifying School, Vani has got in as an invite and some good performances could earn her more invites.

Aditi Ashok, who won two events – the Hero Women’s Indian Open and Qatar Ladies – last year is skipping the event. Aditi has played only the Victorian Open on LET this year and she is trying her hand on the LPGA too, where she has a limited status.

World No.21 Carlota Ciganda will be one of the main players to watch after earning two professional titles in 2016.

Anna Nordqvist is the top ranked European at number 10 on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings and she is in fantastic form following her recent win at the Bank of Hope Founders Cup in the USA.

The field includes two of this year’s Ladies European Tour tournament winners — Melissa Reid, who won her sixth LET title at the Oates Vic Open in Australia in February and Klara Spilkova, who was victorious at the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco on Sunday.

Other stars in the field include Azahara Muñoz, Karine Icher and Gwladys Nocera and they will all be watched by this year’s European Solheim Cup Team Captain Annika Sorenstam. PTI
