Villagers demand action against erring policemen

KATHUA, Oct 22: A couple was killed in a tragic road accident at Lakhanpur near here today due to the sheer negligence of Police and Traffic Police on duty leading to a lot of public resentment in the area.
According to reports, a motorcyclist and his wife who were on way to Lakhanpur from their village Barwal, Kathua were killed after a truck bearing registration number PB 04B7507 came from wrong side and crushed them on spot.
The duo was identified as Manohar Lal, 60 and his wife, Taru Devi, 52 of village Barwal, Kathua. They were immediately shifted to District Hospital Kathua where the doctors declared them as brought dead.
The truck was on way from Pathankot to Jammu and due to traffic jam at Lakhanpur the driver took the wrong side and crushed the motor-cyclist and pillion rider to death, traveling on the bike bearing registration number PB356-7101 from the left side.
The dead bodies were handed over to the family members after postmortem at DH Kathua. The Lakhanpur Police has registered a case under Section 279/304 RPC. The driver of the truck Bhupinder Jit Singh, son of Sukhdev Singh of Mukhtsar Punjab was arrested and truck was also seized by the police.
However the local residents of village Barwal blamed the police officials and traffic cops for the negligence and said that often accidents take place at NH at Lakhanopur due to their negligence. Had the truck not been allowed to take wrong side the tragedy could have been averted and two precious lives would have not been lost, said the villagers who demanded stern action against the driver and registration of murder case against him as well as action against the erring police officials and traffic cops.
