Cong rues non-serious approach of Govt towards accident victims

JAMMU, Jan 24: Congress MLA from Banihal Vikar Rasool Wani today expressed concern over non-serious approach of the PDP-BJP Coalition Government towards victims of road accidents on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Raising the issue after the Question Hour, the Congress MLA brought to the notice of the House that during the past eight months 36 persons have lost lives and 95 others sustained injuries in road accidents on Ramban to Banihal stretch of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
“These are the official figures and Government should apprise the House as to what steps it has taken to minimize the road accidents”, he demanded. However, Speaker allowed the discussion on grants of Transport Department.
This infuriated the Congress MLA, who remarked “I am raising a very serious issue and it should not be ignored”, adding “neither the victims of road accidents have been given any compensation nor Government has taken any step to check mishaps”.
He also pointed out that work on widening of National Highway between Ramban and Banihal has remained halted during the past quite long time but the Government has not come forward to ensure re-start of work. “Unless this stretch of the highway is widened the accidents will continue to take place”, he added.
However, there was no reply from the Government on the grave issue raised by the Congress MLA.
