Cong played vital role for women empowerment: Mir

JAMMU, Mar 29 : Former minister and Pradesh Congress Committee president Ghulam Ahmed Mir today said that Congress has always played vital role in women empowerment and tried to provide them justice.
Addressing one day convention of Pradesh Mahila Congress at Sainik Colony here today, the PCC chief said that   women have played  a vital role in every sphere of life including  in the freedom struggle of the nation and  in  building the destiny of the country and strengthening the  largest and a vibrant democracy in the World.  He said that  women have a very  important role in the society and they should come forward to  strengthen the political system in the Country.
Referring to the  role of women  in the politics he  remembered the  lead role of former Prime Minister  Indira Gandhi  in the empowerment of the women in the Country as  she became the role model for the women folk not only in India but  throughout the World.  He said that Congress has a vision  right from the beginning to ensure  the participation of  women  in  every sphere in the democratic system, as  a result the  highest post in the country, President of India  was  also  held  by a woman.
He said that  Sonia Gandhi is very keen to   empower women  in the Country for which  their participation and encouragement  in the politics is paramount. He said that Mrs Gandhi,  has specially desired to  give adequate representation to the  women in the organizational  setup at all levels apart from  strengthening the Mahila Congress. He  assured  the participants that deserving Mahila leaders would get their  due share in the party setup and asked them to work with zeal and dedication.
Mr Mir referred to the  struggle of the Congress party for  getting 33%  reservation to the  women in the democratic institutions, he said that  the desired  results would be achieved only after the  women from educated  section make a determination , in good numbers,  to  join the  political system. He  asked the Mahila Congress activists to  work in their respective  Municipal Wards so that  the deserving and meritorious  women  having  public support are  considered for  the  mandate of the  party in the  elections to these bodies,  as  33% reservation is available in the Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRI) in view of  the 73rd and   74th  amendments.
Addressing the delegates senior vice president of  PCC  Sham Lal Sharma   appreciated  the Mahila Congress workers for their contribution in the  strengthening of the  party and emphasized need for  promoting the deserving  and dedicated  Mahila workers  in the party, keeping in view  their  vital role in the society.
He said that strengthening the organizational structure  at all levels with larger participation of  women folk  is the need of the time  to expose  the  hollow  slogans and the policy of surrender  by the BJP at the cost of  interests of the people  of Jammu  Region for the sake of power.  Mr Sharma said that  Congress party and its frontal organizations have to gear up  to the grass root level in order to  play the role of a vibrant opposition to  take up  the issues  of people  whose interests  are being compromised by the present  opportunists alliance  of BJP-PDP.
President Mahila Congress  Indu Pawar in  her address  welcomed the PCC president and participants in the session and  dwelt at length the  organization activities of the Mahila Congress during the past few years in all parts of the State. She referred to the appreciable  role of  Mahila Congress units  in different parts of the  State and  felt the need to encourage  the genuine  workers in the party. She assured the leadership that Mahila Congress  will leave no stone unturned to  further strengthen the party in  order to  counter  the  communal and divisive forces in the State.
Kanta Bhan, vice president PCC,  Ravinder Sharma,  chief spokesman PCC,  Namarata Sharma- general secretary PCC,  Parveen  Sarvar-secretary, Neeraj Gupta- organising secretary and Dr Rashid Choudhary were the prominent among those who attended.
