Conference on Climate Change & Sustainable Development begins

JAMMU, Nov 7:  The two-day national conference on the theme “Climate Change and Sustainable Development: Perspectives and Transformational Challenges” organized by the Department of Law, University of Jammu in collaboration with Centre for Environmental Education, Research and Advocacy (CEERA), National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, commenced today at  University of Jammu.
The inaugural ceremony was marked by the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)   between the Department of Law, JU and the National Law School of India University, Benglauru, which has the objectives to collaborate in academic events, teaching, training and research.
The signatories to the MoU were Prof R Venkata Rao, Vice-Chancellor NLSIU, Prof Sairam Bhat, Chairperson of CEERA, NLSIU, Bengaluru, Prof R D Sharma, Vice Chancellor, JU and Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Head, Department of Law.
The conference commenced with threadbare deliberations on the cross-cutting theme of Climate Change and Sustainable Development and the transformational challenges for the integration of climate change policy into national sustainable development strategy.
Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Head, Department of Law and Dr Sairam Bhat, NLSIU, spoke on the themes Climate Justice and Climate Law, respectively followed by lectures by Dr Hippu Nathan of the National Institute of Advanced Studies Bengaluru who spoke on some odd peculiarities in the renewable energy policy which resulted in expensive solar energy sets being provided to inaccessible rural areas with the result that the projects did not sustain.
Dr Veer Mayank of the Sikkim University spoke on how to use financial information available in the Capital Market to tackle the problem of climate change. There were several other paper presenters from other Universities from various parts of the country.
