Cold wave in Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 26: After coldest night of this winter in Srinagar with the minimum temperature dropping to minus 4.2 degrees Celsius, there was improvement in the minimum temperature today across Valley while day temperatures dipped by several notches.
After coldest night in Srinagar previous night at minus 4.2 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature showed improvement and stayed at minus 2.6 degrees Celsius. The day temperature of the place dropped from yesterday’s 11.2 degrees Celsius and settled at 8.8 degrees Celsius.
The mercury in Qazigund in South Kashmir was at a low of minus 3 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 3.6  degrees Celsius the previous night. The day temperature of the place was 8.4 degrees Celsius.
Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, up from yesterday’s minus 2.9 degrees Celsius. The day temperature of the place was 7.6 degrees Celsius.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius last night, same as previous night. The day temperature of the place was 9.4 degrees Celsius.
The mercury at the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir settled at a low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, up from previous night’s minus 5.5 degree Celsius. The day temperature of the place was 4.0 degrees Celsius.
The night temperature in Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 4.9 degrees Celsius, up from previous night’s minus 6.5 degrees Celsius. The resort was the coldest recorded place in the Valley. The day temperature of the place was 4.0 degrees Celsius.
Kargil was the coldest recorded place in the State last night as the minimum temperature settled at minus 15.7 degrees Celsius, followed by Leh town recording minus 12.7 degrees Celsius.
The day temperature of Kargil settled at minus 3.2 degrees Celsius and that of Leh was 4.9 degrees Celsius.
Kashmir is currently under the grip of “Chillai-Kalan”, the 40-day harshest period of winter, when the chances of snowfall are most frequent and temperatures drops considerably. It ends on January 31 next year, but the cold wave continues even after that in the valley. The 40-day period is followed by a 20-day long “Chillai- Khurd” (small cold) and a 10-day long “Chillai-Bachha” (baby cold). The MeT office has forecast mainly dry weather in the valley over the next couple of days.
