Class-IV employees suspend token strike as JU assures time bound action

JAMMU, July 27: The 36-day long token strike by Class-IV employees in Jammu University was suspended today as an agreement was finally reached out between the JU authorities and the Non-Gazetted Employees Union (NGEU), which was spearheading the agitation.
A formal announced in this regard was made by Deputy Commissioner Jammu Simrandeep Singh, who along with DIG Jammu-Kathua-Samba Range, Ashkoor Wani, visited the campus for second consecutive day and intervened as State Government representatives to end the stalemate between JU authorities and NGEU.
JU Vice-Chancellor, Prof R D Sharma, NGEU president Vijay Kumar, Registrar Prof Keshav Sharma, Suresh Sharma (president of JKPDPTU) and others were present during the announcement of agreement.
As per the agreement, signed by the Registrar, Jammu University has sought a time of 4-5 months for taking the pending four demands of NGEU, before the competent bodies for a favourable and sympathetic consideration while the agitating employees shall immediately withdraw the ongoing protest besides returning back to normal duties and the order with respect to ‘No work no pay’ shall stand withdrawn.
The four demands of the NGEU include removal of the pay scale of Rs 2750-4400 (pre-revised), creation of posts of Safai Karamcharis/Malis, re-engagement of Casual Labourers of the Human Genetics Research Cum Counselling Centre and the payment of allowances to the Assistants/Helpers as is being paid by the University of Kashmir.
In the case of revival of HGRCC, the university agreed that disengaged staff shall be given priority for re-engagement while the matter pertaining to the gap period of such employees shall be dealt with as per the applicable rulings of the apex court.
The agreement also says that the university shall form a committee having representatives of NGEU for devising a robust mechanism so that the employees do not have to resort to demonstration or protest.
Further, the agreement adds, there shall be no victimization of the employees who will work for extra hours to complete the pending work, if any, to compensate for the work hours lost.
