Srinagar, May 26: Clashes erupted in Srinagar and Sopore town of Baramulla district after Friday prayers today during which two youth sustained pellet injuries.
Soon after Friday prayers concluded in Jama Masjid in Nowhatta area of Old City, youth staged protests and clashed with security forces deployed in the area. Police fired teargas canisters and pellets to disperse the stone-throwers who, however, continued pelting stones. Two youth sustained injuries due to pellet firing and were removed to hospital for treatment.
The clashes also raged in northern Sopore Town after Friday prayers. The youth converged outside Sopore Jama Masjid and pelted stones on security personnel. The clashes in the area continued for several hours. Earlier, the separatist leaders and activists held protests against the awarding of Major Gogoi at Maisuma here in City Centre.
Meanwhile, two policemen including a Sub-Inspector were injured after a biker hit them at Gojwara in Old City. “There was a naka checking and the biker was asked to stop but he fled before hitting the duo,” a police officer said.
