Civic polls: Low response again in Kashmir valley

SRINAGAR: The Kashmir valley again witnessed a poor voter response, with Anantnag registering just 0.8 per cent turnout on Wednesday, while the Jammu region saw brisk polling, as Ramban notched 62.9 per cent, in the second of the four-phase Urban Local Bodies elections in J&K.   Voting was listless in the 49 wards of the Valley that went to the polls amid a security blanket following a strike call by separatists.

State Election Commission figures showed that the Valley witnessed an impact of boycott in all five districts of Anantnag, Bandipora, Baramulla, Kupwara and Srinagar. October 20 is set for the announcement of the mandate.

The lowest turnout, 0.8 per cent, was seen in 16 wards of south Kashmir district of Anantnag while the highest-22.2 per cent-was recorded in 11 wards of Bandipora till 1200 hrs. The first phase on Monday had seen a voter turnout of 8.3 per cent in the Valley. (AGENCIES)
